1. Decoding the Formula: The Four Variables
The RICE score is calculated as: $$(Reach imes Impact imes Confidence) / Effort$$. Each variable serves as a vital check and balance against your own excitement about a feature.
- ▹Reach: How many people will this affect in a given period (e.g., per quarter)? Use real analytics, not guesses.
- ▹Impact: How much does this contribute to your North Star? Use a standard scale (3 = Massive, 2 = High, 1 = Medium, 0.5 = Low, 0.25 = Minimal).
- ▹Confidence: Your 'Reality Check'. If you have a great idea but no data, your confidence must be low. (100% = High evidence, 50% = Low evidence).
- ▹Effort: Measured in 'person-months'. If a feature is high impact but takes 6 months of 3 developers' time, its score will naturally drop.

2. Reach: Stop Guessing, Start Measuring

Example: If you are improving the checkout flow, your reach is the number of users who reach the checkout page in a month. If you are improving the 'Export CSV' button, your reach is significantly lower.
